LRTC Wild Horse Mentors'
WILD HORSE WORKSHOP 2000
Part Ten

Willis Lamm

Willis, who is the founder and President of LRTC, considers himself a student of horse behavior and enjoys working with difficult horses, especially those whom others have given up on. His greatest enjoyment is the development of the "Dances with Horses" concept using music to help guide cadence and carriage. His mainstay with wild horses is his "Quiet Hour" approach.
Making friends with "Max,"
a former band stallion
If in the horse's mind he is not about to be pursued by the human, he can start to constructively interact in his new environment.
Staying low and unintimidating
First contact using a pole
Preparing to halter up
Humans "close up and personal"
are now no problem

Clicker Training

Willis also demonstrated clicker training; a way to focus and motivate horses that have issues with certain behaviors such as this horse who resisted having his feet lifted and handled.

One of the secrets to gentling and training a wild horse is to avoid triggering the horse's flight or fight response. Low resistance approaches and positive motivators have proved to be the most efficient and humane approaches to wild horse gentling.
