LRTC Wild Horse Mentors'
WILD HORSE WORKSHOP '99
Part 7

Mark Atwood

Sgt. Atwood with US Army mustang "Riley"
Until recently Mark Atwood went by the title First Sergeant (1SG) as he was in charge of the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard at Ft. Riley, KS. He was also one of the original workshop clinicians and is responsible for the US Army's adopting of BLM wild horses to use as remounts for their ceremonial mounted units. These former wild horses serve in battle reenactments, charging across parade grounds while rifles blaze and cannons roar.

Mark likes to come off as the tough Army guy, but if you look closely enough you'll find a superior horseman with a heart of gold.

Mark wanted to get this horse
for Ft. Riley. Instead he ended
up gentling the horse for a young man
who had his heart set on adopting him

Contraceptive Issues
The BLM is studying the use of contraceptives on some wild horse herds. While this approach will not completely resolve population growth rate issues, it may significantly reduce the numbers of horses which have to be removed from the range.
