LRTC Wild Horse Mentors'
WILD HORSE WORKSHOP 2001
Part Five

Lesley Neuman

Lesley is one of the best round pen trainers in the business. She emphasizes reading the horse, working with the opportunities the horse gives her and working to get a soft feel. The horses respond quite well to her and they are correspondingly light and quiet when handled by their adopters.

The horse discovers
that this feels pretty good!
Round penning is not just chasing the horse around in a circle. A wild horse's instinct already is to move away from us. Proper round penning involves interacting with the horse and using the round pen as a safe dimension in which to stage this interaction.

doesn't yet understand the game
A short time later
Lesley teaches people to get the horse to face up and pay attention, but not push the horse past his point of curiosity. When it comes to making first contact, the horse should want to approach the handler and those first touches should be quiet and brief, leaving the horse to want more.

BLM Land Use
Federal regulations require multiple use of Federal lands where appropriate. Management approaches to wild horse herds must accommodate a thriving ecological balance and preserve the multiple use relationships between the horse herds, other plants and animals and reasonable human interests.
